FEMCC Results 2007

Golf Team win the FEMCC League in 2007

Although Woodhall Spa could only draw the last match with Sapcote, they won the league when Ashby A lost their last match of the season against the other Ashby team.

The Woodhall Spa Croquet Club golf team played their third match of the season against Northampton in the East Midlands Federation League at Jubilee Park on Saturday 14th July.  Although out of practice because of the water logged lawns at Jubilee Park the Woodhall side fielded probably one of their strongest teams consisting of Tom Brant, John Norman and Bob Potter against a strong Northampton team and came away worthy winners with a score line reading 10 wins and 2 losses.  However the games were very close and exciting with three games going to the final hoop and two others being timed out when fortunately Woodall were in the lead.  Home advantage and a few lucky shots, sometimes on the final hoop assisted the Woodhall challenge.  The stars were Brant and Norman who won all three of their singles and both of their doubles matches.

In their first match of the season Woodhall drew 6-6 with Ashby1 away with a team of Nigel Harding, John Norman and Tom Whitby.  The final result being dependent on the last hoop of the last game being played by J Norman not knowing that a win in this game would give Woodhall a match win.  Unfortunately he risked a long shot at the hoop and failed instead of playing safe, while his opponent succeeded with a similar shot and so the whole match was drawn.  Woodhall will have the advantage of count back for league position at the end of the season because of winning more hoops in the match.

A few weeks later Woodhall succeeded with a 7-5 win over Ashby2 played at Jubilee Park.  The team consisted of Tom Brant, Bob Potter and Ann Potter playing in her first match.  The star of the match was Bob Potter who won all of his three single games on the last hoop.

In the Croquet Association 14 point league Woodhall have played one match against Nottingham.  It should have been a home match at Jubilee Park; but that was the weekend the lawns and flower beds were under water which was not helped by a blocked drainage pipe in the Park.  Fortunately Nottingham’s lawns were playable so the match was hastily re-arranged.  The Woodhall team of David Eckford, Nigel Harding, John Norman and Tom Whitby did enjoy playing on the good flat full size lawns of Nottingham; but it did not help the result as the match was lost 3-4.  J Norman was the most consistent player winning both his single games; the last courtesy of a mistake on the last hoop by the opposition allowing Norman to take the last hoop and win by two points.
