The Croquet Association Secretary’s Shield competition 2006

Woodhall Spa Croquet Club won the national final of the Croquet Association’s Secretary’s Shield for Association croquet last year and thus secured entry again this year as defending champions.

The first round of the competition saw four members travelling down to Watford to play. A most hospital welcome awaited the team who performed superbly well after their 3-hour journey.

The first round included one doubles game and 2 singles, all of which the Woodhall Spa team won. They thus enjoyed a sumptuous lunch knowing that only one more win was enough to clinch a move into the next round. The remaining four singles games were played within their time limits, and once again the Woodhall Spa team won all their matches making it a 7-0 win.

The Woodhall Spa team comprised Bob Thompson from Sutton in Ashfield, David Eckford from Panton, John Norman from Tattershall Thorpe, Patricia Duke-Cox from Woodhall Spa. The scores were (Woodhall Spa team first) Patricia and John (+18) v Janet and Bill; David (+16) v Mark, Bob (+12) v John, Patricia (+10) v Mark, David (+22) v Janet, Bob (+14) v Bill, John (+11) v John.

Their next round was against Blewbury from Oxfordshire. The team did not perform so well on the very dry and fast lawns of the Northampton club hosting this event. David Eckford was the only player to win both his games, + 2 and +1, both on time. Patricia and John lost –3 on time in their doubles match, with Patricia losing –4 in her singles game, Bob losing his matches –9 and –5 both on time, and John losing his match –3 on time.
