Hunstanton’s Over 50s croquet competition

The Jane Neville-Rolfe Trophy, in the form of a silver salver, is the prize for winning the Over 50s competition of Association Croquet at the Hunstanton Croquet Club. It was won, for the second time by local member Patricia Duke-Cox of Woodhall Spa.

A delightful three days were spent at Hunstanton for their Over 50s tournament. It had 21 entrants - an extra player arrived on the first morning - but this was ably sorted and managed by Ian Storey. The sun shone against all predictions, although there was a half hour of monsoon on Saturday.

Excellent food and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere prevailed. Umpteen games played, as everybody was so keen to get on to Hunstanton's immaculate sward (very well kept by groundsman Jeff Race who takes a personal interest as his own game improves on an exponential basis).

The devious Egyptian points system meant that most competitors never really knew who was going to win until the last game on Sunday. Different leaders appeared each day, but gradually got knocked off that perch leaving Patricia, whose last game was against the manager, to win by just one point and collect the trophy.
