Versions of Croquet
Croquet is an enjoyable game for all ages and both sexes. It is a combination of skill and tactics, no great physical strength, or speed is needed. Variants of the game cater for all levels of ability and interest. The versions can be played as doubles or singles. One team has the red and yellow balls while the other has blue and black. In doubles a player is assigned a defined colour within the team. Contrary to a widely held belief, balls leaving the field of play are returned to where they left it before play continues.
The object in Association Croquet is to get the teams 2 balls through a series of hoops in the right order and direction to reach the peg before the opponent. By playing a succession of strokes and earning bonus strokes it is possible to build a break, as in snooker. The handicapping system enables people of all abilities to play together on equal terms. Points are scored when hoops are passed through and a full game is played to 26 points and a short game to 14 points. The time allowed for a competitive 14 point game is typically 1 hour 15 minutes.
Association Croquet
In Golf Croquet the hoops are “run” in the same order as in Association Croquet, but the balls start in a different place. Players take alternate shoots in the colour order shown on the centre peg. A hoop point is scored for the team whose ball runs the hoop first, then the players contest the next hoop. Games are normally played to 7 or 13 points. Golf Croquet is easy to learn and is a very sociable game. A 13 point game typically takes about 30 minutes.
